Mumbai HC Directs State Govts to Act Against Unregistered Pet Shops

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has instructed the state government to act on complaints of unregistered pet shops operating throughout the state.

On Wednesday, Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Makarand Karnik heard a PIL by Shivraj Patne, who was seeking the implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (pet shop) rules.

Among the grounds included in the complaint, it was noted that the spaces in which animals are kept do not meet the minimum required standards of animal housing. Pet shops cannot engage in business without registering themselves, which is a regrettably common occurrence.

The petitioner’s counsel cited a May 2017 order from a concluded PIL, which stated that any complaint brought before the competent authority must be acted upon in accordance with the law. Since that order was limited to pet shops in Mumbai’s Crawford Market, the petitioner now seeks a similar directive to be applied across the entire state.
